Coco Lee, a Hong Kong Disney star and pop singer-songwriter, died at the age of 48
Coco Lee, a well-known Asian pop singer who achieved success in the 1990s and 2000s, has died at the age of 48. Lee, who was born in Hong Kong but migrated to the US when she was young, has albums in both English and Mandarin.In 2001, she sang a song from the soundtrack of the Oscar-nominated movie Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and gave the voice for the lead character in the Mandarin version of Disney’s blockbuster Mulan.
Her sisters said that Lee had battled depression for a number of years. They claimed in a Facebook post that she attempted suicide over the weekend, fell into a coma, and died on Wednesday in the hospital. With two Mandarin albums, Lee made her Mandopop breakthrough in 1994. She released her third Mandarin album and an English-language record the following year.
In a letter to her sisters, Lee’s sisters said, “In the past 29 years, she not only brought us joy through her songs and performances, but also worked hard to pave new ground for Chinese singers in the international music scene and shine for the Chinese people.”
She also sang the Mulan movie’s “Reflection” theme song in Mandarin. Additionally, her song “Before I Fall in Love” was included on the soundtrack of the 1999 Julia Roberts and Richard Gere movie Runaway Bride.
She took part in the South Korean Michael Jackson & Friends charity event that year, and she also acted as a judge for a Chinese idol competition. In an Instagram post on the eve of the previous New Year, Lee said that she had to overcome “significant obstacles that changed her life” and that 2022 would be “incredibly challenging.”
On February 14 of this year, her most recent song, “Trademark Bright Smile,” was published.
She posted on Facebook in March that she had had surgery on her pelvis and thighs as a result of an old foot injury she had sustained during dancing practise at the end of the previous year.The former CEO of the Hong Kong-based supply chain business Li & Fung, Bruce Rockowitz, and Lee were married in 2011. She is the mother of two girls from a previous union.
